Column: We must come together to keep our republic
Tim Ryan
Gallows on the Capitol lawn. Molotov cocktails at the ready. Zip-tie handcuffs in the House of Representatives and Senate Chambers. Law enforcement officers beaten and killed. There is no sugar-coating what happened at our nation’s Capitol on January 6th: Domestic terrorists violently breached the seat of American government with the intent of preventing the certification of rightful winner of the 2020 presidential election.
As chaos unfolded that afternoon, I was thankful to be have been sheltered in a safe area of the House Office Buildings. I watched updates in horror as Capitol Police were overrun and the violent mob took the Capitol building. Like most Americans, I was heartbroken at what was unfolding in the heart of our nation’s 244-year old democratic experiment.

As law enforcement in Washington, D.C., braced for protests at the Capitol and around the nation s capital Wednesday when Congress meets to ratify Joe Biden as winner of the presidential election, the leader of the alt-right group, the Proud Boys, urged members to show up in support of President Donald Trump.
National Guard members in Washington, D.C., will wear black vests – in place of their usual camouflage ones – on Wednesday as crowds have already begun to gather to show their support for President Trump before the newly sworn-in Congress is expected to officially certify Electoral College votes in the final step before President-elect Joe Biden is sworn in on Jan. 20.
The black identification vests are meant to highlight a different mission for D.C. National Guard, spokesman Capt. Tinashe T. Machona told Fox News. It is the traditional uniform worn during domestic support operations, including presidential inaugurations, the 4th of July celebration, response to the COVID-19 pandemic, and the 57th anniversary of the March on Washington last year. It is not body armor or a tactical vest.
