Family of American imprisoned in Russia believes he was targeted over past military service
The parents of Trevor Reed, an American who has been imprisoned in Russia for almost two years, revealed for the first time on Thursday that their son served as a Marine presidential guard a fact they believe led Russia to target him for what they say is wrongful detention.
Joey and Paula Reed told CNN’s Jake Tapper on “The Lead” that they felt it was time to speak out about Trevor’s past military career, which they said included assignments at the Marine barracks in Washington, DC, and Camp David under the Obama administration.

In the closing days of the Trump administration, the U.S. State Department lifted decades-old restrictions on diplomatic exchanges between American and Taiwanese diplomats. Since the U.S. severed diplomatic relations with Taiwan under the Carter administration in 1979, the State Department had imposed increasing layers of restrictions on official interactions with Taiwan for fear of agitating China.
Last week the House Foreign Affairs Committee held a public hearing on Reclaiming Congressional War Powers. It s an admirable aspiration, but more than talk will be necessary for the legislative branch to wrest back from the White House its constitutional authority to decide when the United States goes to war.
Presidents of both parties have deployed U.S. forces on the basis of outdated congressional authorizations or under an exaggerated notion of their powers as commander in chief. That lack of accountability harms more than Congress pride. It allows a president to put American troops in harm s way â and potentially commit them to years of deployment â without having to persuade the people s representatives that the mission is necessary.
