A group of American lawmakers has put forward a draft legislation that seeks to prevent Saudi Arabia from acquiring nuclear weapons amid reports about suspected attempts by the kingdom to process uranium and move toward the development of atomic bombs.
The Stopping Activities Underpinning Development in Weapons of Mass Destruction (SAUDI WMD) Act was introduced earlier this week by Senators Ed Markey and Jeff Merkley as well as Congressmen Ted Lieu and Joaquin Castro.
Israel has briefly detained three Jerusalem-based candidates for Palestinian legislative elections, deepening a dispute over whether banning Palestinian residents of East Jerusalem from voting in next month’s polls could derail them.
The three candidates represent factions of the Palestine Liberation Organization who planned a press conference in a Jerusalem hotel to call for the need to press Israel into allowing political activities in the eastern part of the city, reported the official Palestinian news agency, Wafa.
In briefly detaining the candidates, Israel appears to be signaling it will not tolerate Palestinian political activity in East Jerusalem. It has not said whether it will or will not allow Palestinian residents of East Jerusalem to vote in the election.

A group of U.S. lawmakers on Thursday expressed concerns over a recent South Korean law that prohibits the dispersal of propaganda leaflets to North Korea, noting the law may limit the freedom of speech of South Koreans and others working to promote human rights.
Their shared concerns were expressed at the start of a hearing hosted by a bipartisan caucus of the House of Representatives, the Tom Lantos Human Rights Commission.

arrest Palestinian youth.
By targeting Israel’s detention of Palestinian children just one aspect of Israel’s military occupation, but one that involved a highly vulnerable population McCollum was attempting to make her bills appeal to the widest swath of Democrats possible.
