Washington | Republicans in the US Senate want to delay the impeachment trial of Donald Trump for at least three weeks, saying the former president needs more time to assemble a defence against the accusation that he incited the deadly January 6 invasion of the Capitol.
Minority Leader Mitch McConnell floated postponing the start of the trial until mid-February on Thursday (Friday AEST), telling colleagues Mr Trump deserved more time to prepare his case and file briefs with the Senate. A conviction could bar Mr Trump from public office in the future.
