By Mike Genet mike.genet@examiner.net The Examiner While state and federal agencies look into the energy prices during February’s cold snap, some Independence City Council members warn about sticker shock if the city’s electric utility has to recover some costs.  The municipal utility had told customers a few weeks ago that they would see slightly higher bills into the summer due to the cold snap. To recover some of those costs, IPL said customers would see an increase of about $9 to $10 in the fuel-cost-adjustment portion of their bill for several months. Department director Jim Nail said he chose that method rather than a single, higher add-on to bills. 

Montrose School District partnering to help homeless kids

A pilot program is being launched to support homeless children in the Montrose County School District (MCSD.) MCSD is partnering with Housing Resources of Western Colorado (HRWC) and Hilltop Community Resources to assist with housing insecurity and other needs for five families over two years. Two families will enroll in the first year, and three will in the second. HRWC will secure safe and affordable housing for the families, according to a news release. They’ll also provide families with a counselor who will coach families through skills such as budgeting. Meanwhile, Hilltop will assign case managers to families who will help families improve in areas such as employment, health, parenting and basic needs.

City of Kalamazoo approves grant agreement with United Way to help shelter homeless population

KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) To help support efforts in homeless assistance. Kalamazoo City Commissioners have voted to approve an agreement in the form of a $250,000 grant to the United Way of the Battle Creek and Kalamazoo Region. During a virtual meeting Monday, Commissioners discussed the matter at length with representatives of various housing assistance entities. According to city documents, the funds would be taken from the Foundation for Excellence 2020 Fiscal Year fund balance to support the Disaster Relief Fund (DRF) and amend the 2021 budget accordingly.
