Connor Vande Garde’s ideal day was carving turns in Vail’s Blue Sky Basin and cooking something up on the grill at Belle’s Camp.
That’s exactly what the 20-year-old was doing on March 11, 2020, when he lost an edge while skiing fast down one of his favorite runs and crashed hard, sliding into a tree. The accident took Connor’s life and left his parents, Blake and Nikki, and his three siblings, Nate, Caleb and Hailey, in shock and disbelief.
On Thursday, the Vande Garde family and some close friends returned to the tree where the accident occurred to honor Connor. The tree is located in a glade that sits skiers’ left of The Star trail in Blue Sky Basin, visible from the Pete’s Express chairlift.

EAGLE COUNTY, Colo. More than 25,400 doses of COVID-19 vaccine have been administered in Eagle County. That’s nearly half of the county’s population 55,127 as estimated by the U.S. Census Bureau back in 2019.

Of course, 25,000 doses don’t translate into 25,000 people because some of the vaccine numbers reflect two-dose requirements. But still …
“That number, as a percentage of the population, is incredible and we are very, very proud of it,” said Eagle County Emergency Management Director Birch Barron on Tuesday.
The town of Vail is hosting a virtual open house at 5 p.m. Thursday, March 18, to introduce the construction schedule for the South Frontage Road roundabout project. Property owners, residents, commuters and others impacted by the seven-month project are encouraged to attend the online kick off by registering to attend at vailgov.com/roundaboutproject
. The meeting will be recorded and posted to the project webpage for anyone unable to join the session.
Construction of the South Frontage Road roundabout project will begin April 12, following the close of ski season, and is scheduled to be completed by early November. The project includes construction of a new two-lane roundabout just west of the Vail municipal building and Vail Health. The project also includes extending the existing four-lane roadway section with landscape medians and sidewalks from the municipal building west to the Lionshead parking structure.
