WATAUGA COUNTY, N.C. (WBTV) - Sgt. Chris Ward and K-9 deputy Logan Fox stopped at a Watauga County home, just east of Boone, to check on the occupants.
They responded for a welfare check at the home on Hardaman Circle shortly before 10 a.m. April 28.
It was the final call as deputies with the Watauga County Sheriff’s Office.
Sgt. Ward and deputy Fox were shot before an hours-long standoff that lasted all day and into the night.

WATAUGA COUNTY, N.C. (WBTV) - The Watauga County community is mourning.
They lost two of their first responders who were killed last week while responding to a call.
Mount Vernon Baptist Church was used last Wednesday as a staging area during an hours-long standoff that ended with two Watauga County deputies dead.
Sgt. Chris Ward and Deputy Logan Fox died after they were shot responding to a welfare check near Boone last week.

The board of education has authorized the sale of the old colored school building in the Fourth Ward to John Burkhart, Jr., for $18. A committee composed of C.F. Hickok, W.M. Crozier and John H. Taft has been named to select the site for the new building which will be arranged for a high school with several rooms for primary and grammar grades. It will be located in the Fourth Ward.

The posts are to be lighted by the company to show the effect of the white way lighting system about the public square should the city decide on that system of street lighting.
