SMEs as engine of Akwa Ibom’s economic growth
On
By Kennedy Mbele
Governor Udom Emmanuel’s plan to make Akwa Ibom State an industrial hub hinges on the existence of a strong and virile Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) sector. This explains the attention his administration has been paying to the development of that sector to be able to play its role in the emerging private sector-driven economy.
Economies all over the world depend on SMEs to thrive. In highly industrialised countries, apart from supplying inputs for products manufactured by big industries and corporations, they collectively provide more employment than the former. That is the role they are expected to play in an industrialised Akwa Ibom, hence the special attention the government is giving to the development of that sector. This importance is underscored by the fact that development of SMEs is a major component of the Eight-Point Completion Agenda of Udom’s second term.

The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Pastor Enoch Adeboye has prayed for Governor Udom Emmanuel’s successor, asking God to give Akwa Ibom a Governor in 2023 that will continue with the prevailing peace and development of the state and take it to greater heights.
This came minutes after the General Overseer who arrived the State on Saturday, finished from a Sunday Service he held at the Discovery Park in Uyo which was attended by a mammoth crowd of believers as part of his weekend Pastoral activities in Uyo, the State capital.

THE remarkable success that Ibom Air has recorded in less than two years of operation has once again brought to the fore, what could be achieved when leaders demonstrate the political will to take decisions on issues they know are in public interest, no matter how unpopular those decisions might appear to be.
The decision by Governor Udom Emmanuel of Akwa Ibom State, in 2019, to establish a government-owned airline wasn’t one that went down well with some people in the state, especially naysayers and cynics who are wont to criticise every of his actions but who, as events have often shown, cannot see what the governor sees while taking those actions.
