India s app ban follows US tech paranoia

India s app ban follows US tech paranoia Jan 28, 2021, 10:51 India made permanent a ban imposed in June 2020 on 59 Chinese apps including TikTok, Baidu, WeChat and UC Browser. The decision was made after India reviewed responses from companies on issues such as compliance and privacy, Reuters reported on Tuesday. Since the border clashes with China in May 2020, India had cited national security as an excuse to ban a total of 267 Chinese apps.  These moves clearly violate the market principles and WTO rules, and seriously infringe upon Chinese companies legitimate interests. It is hoped that India can assure a fair, just, and nondiscriminatory environment for businesses from different countries, including China.

Flying Splinters

Why Read This? Grassroots efforts to protect the environment in China rely heavily on independently printed or electronically transmitted words. But when the voice of an environmental activist such as Liu Futang rubs authorities the wrong way, silence can be quickly enforced. The sudden shutdown of Liu’s microblog, his arrest on charges tied to self-published books, and his recent trial follow a pattern of occasional yet often harsh, authoritarian action against environmentalists involved in locally specific campaigns across the country. The good news is that even small-town environmental conflicts are becoming increasingly visible to the general public nationwide through printed and microblogged words.

China updates rules on social media accounts, increasing the already high cost of moderation

Updated rules on public social media accounts detail scope of banned activities. ‘Self-media’ draws increasing government scrutiny as popularity soars. SCMP China’s cyberspace watchdog has revised its rules governing public social media accounts in a fresh bid to crack down on fake news and other online activities perceived to be harmful. The Cyberspace Administration of China published on Friday updated regulations on the management of public internet accounts, which are set to take effect on Feb 22. It marks the first change since 2017, when more users began turning to public accounts to reach a wider audience. Businesses, news organisations and individuals commonly use public accounts, also known as official accounts, to post on platforms like Weibo and WeChat.
