ANCC welcomes Canada’s decision to halt arms sales to Turkey The Armenian National Committee of Canada issued the following statement on Tuesday regarding Foreign Affairs Minister Marc Garneau’s decision to cancel all previously suspended arms export permits to Turkey. “The Armenian National Committee of Canada welcomes Foreign Affairs Minister, the Hon. Marc Garneau’s decision as an important step in upholding Canada’s commitments under domestic and international law. While we applaud this action, we continue to have serious concerns regarding Canada’s arms export control regime and our relationship with Turkey within this sphere. As we continue monitoring this issue, we call upon the government to apply a higher level of transparency in the process to grant arms export permits, and enforce a full ban on Canadian arms sales to Turkey and Azerbaijan.

Westmount High School wants its most famous alum to stop in for a visit

  MONTREAL If U.S. Vice-President Kamala Harris happens to be in Canada any time soon, her old high school in Montreal would love to host her. The chairman of the English Montreal School Board wrote to Foreign Affairs Minister Marc Garneau today formally requesting to have Harris stop over in Montreal during an eventual official visit to Canada. Joe Ortona writes the board was proud to see Harris, a graduate of Westmount High School, ascend to the vice presidency last November. Harris, 56, who spent her teen years in Montreal, has proven an inspiration to many, including at her old school.

Biden s planned U.S. pullout from Afghanistan to use Sept. 11 anniversary as deadline by The Canadian Press Last Updated Apr 14, 2021 at 12:58 pm EDT WASHINGTON President Joe Biden is to start the clock today on the long-awaited withdrawal of all U.S. troops from Afghanistan.  Biden will set Sept. 11 as the deadline for the pullout the 20th anniversary of the 2001 attacks on U.S. soil that touched off two decades of bloody Middle East conflict.  Canada’s combat mission in the war-torn country included the deaths of 159 soldiers, the largest military toll since the Korean War.  Four civilians, including Calgary Herald journalist Michelle Lang, also died in the conflict, as did Canadian diplomat Glyn Berry.
