World-renowned fiddler Frankie Gavin has performed a lament in Temple Bar to mark one year since the pubs were forced to close due to Covid-19 restrictions.
Mr Gavin was joined by piper Louise Mulcahy on the empty cobbled streets of the cultural quarter, ahead of St Patrick’s Day, to highlight the devastating impact of the pandemic.
The pubs, cafes, shops and streets of the cultural quarter would normally be packed with tourists in the run up to St Patrick’s Day.

Members of the Eurogroup have agreed to continue with a supportive budgetary stance through the rest of this year and into 2022.
The group said this would help ensure a smoother path to recovery. We are united in our approach that until the health crisis is over and recovery is firmly underway, we will continue to protect our economy through the deployment of the necessary level of fiscal support, the 19 members said in a joint statement following today s meeting.
It was chaired by Eurogroup President, Paschal Donohoe, who said he welcomed the agreement. Beyond sharing a currency, euro area economies share strengths and dependencies, and a determination to act together in times of difficulty, he said.

The hotel group which owns Clayton Whites and The Maldron has announced losses of more than €100 million during 2020. Dalata Hotel Group, which is the largest hotel operator in Ireland, also revealed it had seen a 68 per cent reduction in revenue last year because of the pandemic.
And, after a challenging year, outgoing Group CEO Pat McCann called upon the Irish Government to continue its support of the hotel industry. Given the scale of our business in Ireland, the Irish support packages are particularly important, he said. The Employment Wage Subsidy Scheme and the commercial rates waiver in Ireland remain in place until 30 June 2021. The ongoing support is critical as the industry navigates through this crisis and positions for recovery.
