Sunshine Coast business operator penalised
The Fair Work Ombudsman has secured a $5,250 penalty in court against the operator of a business at Bald Knob, in Queensland’s Sunshine Coast region.
The Federal Circuit Court has imposed the penalty against Amelia Ann Tester, who operates a business trading as Tarquin Lavender, which sells lavender products and previously operated a café and bed-and-breakfast.
The penalties were imposed in response to Ms Tester breaching the Fair Work Act by failing to comply with two Compliance Notices requiring her to calculate and back-pay entitlements owing to six employees.
Ms Tester back-paid the employees in full only after the Fair Work Ombudsman commenced legal action.

Adelaide Chinatown eateries face workplace audits
The Fair Work Ombudsman (FWO) is making surprise visits to restaurants, cafés and fast food outlets in Adelaide’s Chinatown precinct this week, including the Adelaide Central Market.
At least 60 businesses face audits with Fair Work Inspectors speaking with business owners, managers and employees to check that workers are being paid correctly.
The regulator is acting after receiving intelligence from a range of sources, including requests for assistance, our Anonymous report tool and various stakeholders, indicating potential breaches of workplace laws by some businesses in the area.
Fair Work Ombudsman Sandra Parker said the audits will include a focus on employers that have sponsored visa holders.

Two Subway franchisees in court
The Fair Work Ombudsman has commenced legal action in the Federal Circuit Court against the operators of two Subway outlets in Adelaide.
Facing court are Hutt Nominees Pty Ltd, which is the franchisee of the Subway outlet on Jetty Road in Glenelg, and McNeill Investments Pty Ltd, which is the franchisee of the Subway outlet in the Bayside Village Shopping Centre in Glenelg. Also facing court is Adelaide man Jason Matthew Hood, who is a director of both companies.
The regulator investigated after receiving requests for assistance from two former employees of Hutt Nominees and one former employee of McNeill Investments.
