New ECTC schedule to deliver student advantages

This fall, Elizabethtown Community and Technical College will roll out new eight-week class schedules. The initiative, called 8 Week Advantage, offers multiple advantages to students, from new high school graduates to working adults who are coming back to the classroom for the first time in a while. 8-Week Advantage reorganizes students’ schedules, so they can focus on fewer classes at a time. The fall and spring semesters will have two eight-week sessions. One eight-week session will be offered in the summer. For example, during a traditional 16-week semester, a full-time student typically takes five three-credit-hour courses, earning a total of 15 credits. With 8-Week Advantage, that student will take two or three classes per eight-week session. The student will focus on fewer classes at a time and earn the same 15 credit hours. Over the course of the semester, the average time devoted to their classes will not change.

Kentucky higher education sounds alarm over drops in enrollment, aid applications

Kentucky higher education sounds alarm over drops in enrollment, aid applications Rick Childress, Lexington Herald-Leader Feb. 19 Overall enrollment and applications for student aid are down across the state, a warning sign that Kentucky s already underserved populations may be facing challenges outside of the classroom that keep them from enrolling. Compared to this time last year, enrollment in the state s community college system is down 9 percent, while overall enrollment this past fall at public four-year institutions is down 2 percent, according to the state s Council on Postsecondary Education. At the same time completion of the complex Free Application for Federal Student Aid form better known as the FAFSA and a necessity to become eligible for many grants, loans and scholarships that make education more affordable is down 18 percent in Kentucky compared to this time last year.

ECTC to adopt new eight-week schedule

Elizabethtown Community and Technical College will transition to an eight-week class schedule this fall.  According to a news release, beginning fall 2021, 8-Week Advantage reorganizes the academic calendar into five eight-week sessions. The fall and spring semesters will have two eight-week sessions, and one eight-week session will be offered in the summer. College President Juston Pate said around three years ago, while traveling to various conferences, he began hearing about student success from schools who adopted some type of compressed schedule. About two years ago, Pate said he began talking to people about the schedule at the college and asked them to do some research. The college began hearing feedback from people at the school about a year ago.
