The presiding poet was from Kashmir, and my classmates half the age of yours truly. A welcoming Shahid Ali wrote the King’s English with a clarity we could only aspire to. I’d written poetry for years, but taking an Master of Fine Arts workshop was a dream. My assignment: Bring a new poem each week; read it to be critiqued by peers and professor. It’s said, humility is a virtue that defeats the sin of pride. I learned my lesson.

Stroud teen Vahanvaty plays with poetry for national competition

Standup comedy and long, solo talks to the bathroom mirror got Stroudsburg High School senior Taha Vahanvaty to his place in the national finals of the Poetry Out Loud competition. The competition asks students to perform three poems, reciting the author’s words with strict accuracy while demonstrating a personal understanding of the piece. “It almost has to sound like their own words coming out,” said Shari Griswold, the English teacher who suggested that Vahanvaty enter the competition. Vahanvaty won the school-wide competition this year and last year, earning a regional competition spot each time. The journey ended there last year, but he placed first in the state competition this year. Judging of the national competition starts Sunday; Vahanvaty will first find out whether he made the top nine, and then possibly his place within that group.

Minor among three ‘raped’ PHOTO: AFP KURIANWALA: Two women and a minor girl were allegedly sexually assaulted in the city on Tuesday. Police registered cases and started searching for the fugitives. Naeem Ahmed, a resident of Mohalla Hajveri Town, registered a case which stated that the suspect Asad Jawad took the complainant’s wife to his house where he raped her at gunpoint. The alleged rapist was a close relative of the complainant. Separately, in the case filed by a resident of Chak No 393GB, it was stated that the complainant worked as a housemaid in Shahid Ali s house. Shahid along with Khadim Hussain and Asif Murad took her to a cattle ranch where he raped her. The alleged rapist also filmed the incident while his accomplices kept guard.
