MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) - Commissioners are saying they want to do what’s in their power to support the Shelby County Health Department in administering vaccines quickly.
This comes after constituents reached out to them about the issues they had trying to get a vaccine at the Pipkin building this week.
They said they reached out to the health department to understand what was going on.
Some answers they said weren’t clear, but they’re set to support the department in this major venture of vaccinating the community.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) - Wednesday Shelby County Health Director Dr. Alisa Haushalter said they cannot turn outsiders away.
“It’s a federal asset, and we cannot turn someone away if they’re out of state or out of the county. That’s important for people to recognize, just like others can’t turn our people away if they go to their county because it’s a federal asset,” Dr. Haushalter said.
The Shelby County Health Department opened up vaccinations for more people Thursday. Shelby County is still vaccinating people that fall under Phase 1a1, but starting Thursday, they announced funeral and mortuary workers who currently fall under Phase 1a2 can also begin getting vaccinated.

Tuesday, Dr. Haushalter also offered new details on the expected arrival of COVID-19 vaccines for the health department to distribute to first responders and those at assisted living facilities. We expect that if the (Moderna) vaccine is here and it we have FDA approval that we can begin vaccinating as early as (December) 28th, Dr. Haushalter said. We are coordinating with the municipalities, particularly their EMS providers, to make sure they are first in line.
