Four grassroots leaders have been recognised with Nasreen Smriti Padak yesterday for their outstanding contributions to women empowerment and society.
The award is a signature initiative of ActionAid Bangladesh in memory of Nasreen Parvin Huq, former country director of the organisation.
The awardees are Susmita Sultana Swarnali, a student of Chattogram, MS Hasna Begum, an agro-based entrepreneur from Gaibandha, and MS Rani Begum, a farmer from Gaibandha and Sohanur Rahman, a social worker of Jhalakathi.
They were awarded for their contributions towards women leadership in the local government system, entrepreneurship in agriculture, leadership in Covid-19 response and setting an example against sexual harassment and abuse, respectively.

Most of the people who received COVID vaccine doses in Bangladesh have not reported any major side-effect.

A shipbreaking yard worker died today, five days after he suffered burn injuries in a fire at a ship in Chattogram s Sitakunda on February 6.
The deceased Md Jashim (40), hailing from Kumira in Sitakunda upazila, used to work at the yard.
Hamidur Rahman, director of NR Shipbreaking, told our Chattogram staff correspondent that the worker sustained burn injuries while he was cutting a pipe in the ship s engine room. We sent him (Jashim) to Dhaka for better treatment and tried our best to save his life, he added.

Freedom fighter Aziza Rahman has taken a vaccine dose at Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery arriving in a wheelchair. );

“I took the vaccine shot not to live longer, but to keep others safe,” the 90-year-old former professor of Dhaka University’s Institute of Education and Research said after being inoculated on Thursday.
Aziza arrived at the vaccination centre in the morning accompanied by her daughter, son-in-law and a housemaid all of whom also received vaccine doses.
“I wasn’t afraid at all. I overcame fear in 1971. I still bear the marks of bullet wounds on my hands and feet. Now we are fighting against an invisible foe. The vaccine is the weapon for us to win a victory in this war,” she said.

At least seven persons were burnt in a fire at an automobile workshop in Dhaka s Tejgaon-Gulshan Link Road area this afternoon.
The injured were taken to Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery for treatment.
They are: Sakibul Islam Shimul, 25, junior technician of the Maple Lead International Workshop; three employees Jewel, 32, Rabiul Islam, 24, Suman, 20; and three private car drivers Ali Akbar, 52, Haider Ali, 25, and Rubel Hawlader, 27.
The employees were in the workshop while the drivers were standing nearby when a car caught fire around 1:00pm, said Habibur Rahman, servicing manager of the workshop.
