Most of the time, winners of hit BBC TV show The Apprentice disappear into the ether and are never heard from again. But not Alana Spencer, who in 2016 secured a £250,000 investment in her bakery business ‘Ridiculously Rich by Alana’ from Lord Alan Sugar.

Late last year, Spencer opened her first By The Sea café in Aberystwyth and now she has signed for a 2,230 sq ft unit at Schroder UK Real Estate Fund’s mixed-use Mermaid Quay scheme on Cardiff Bay’s waterfront – the first of a Wales-wide rollout of up to 10 new By the Sea venues in 2021.
THE past year has been an extremely difficult time for our hospitality industry. Lockdowns have forced bars, cafes and restaurants to close for months at a time, and they remain only able to offer takeaway at the moment. But with a reopening date set out in the Government s roadmap out of lockdown, it appears brighter days are on the horizon. Cafes, bars and restaurants will be able to reopen from May 17 for up to six people in a group, and even as early as April 12 if customers are seated outside. Despite the difficult circumstances, some businesses have opened new ventures in Colchester during the past year.

I’m grateful for how the pandemic afforded me more time with my family, particularly my children. This helped give me a revitalised perspective on how important investing in the next generation is for the future of our society and economy. Not only do I want to continue investing in my family, but also the young architects who are the future of our profession. We need to ‘mind the gap’ in terms of the lack of hands-on workplace opportunities that many have not benefitted from due to the pandemic and find a way to make this available no matter the cost.
