In a meeting with transportation minister Mary Polak, Gimse said she and Village of Pemberton representatives brought up a number of issues with conditions on Highway 99 north of Whistler, including the need to improve shoulders for cyclists and the necessity of a northbound passing lane on Suicide Hill instead of the informal arrangement that currently exists.
“Just the concept of anybody putting in that many years of service into one’s community is pretty exceptional,” said Mike Richman, acting mayor of Pemberton. “It’s a job as well, but it’s more than that. When you have to be on duty, you’re taking calls and when you’re that active in something like firefighting for that many years, that’s a pretty huge commitment and a pretty huge accomplishment. It definitely merits some recognition.” Richman is well aware of the dedication all three firefighters have displayed over the years, but said it would be hard to hear the firefighters say that out loud.

Douglas said the recommended traffic times for Highway 99 are expected to be released soon to the public and provide people with the ability to plan ahead to avoid road closures. We are taking a bit of a different approach because the road closures are not exactly black and white, she said, adding as soon as the last riders are cleared off the course the road will be opened. For this first year we are being conservative with information because we want to make sure people are successfully getting where they want to go we are reluctant to be specific about closure times because we will lift them as soon as we can.
