Studebaker National Museum drives into the Disco Decade

Although Studebaker stopped making cars altogether in 1966, the Studebaker National Museum finds that the following “disco decade” of the ’70s has an important story to tell. “White vinyl tops and white leather interiors (are some things) you don’t see anymore,” Studebaker National Museum Archivist Andrew Beckman says. “Cars actually came in colors that weren’t black, white or silver once upon a time.” The exhibit includes a 1972 Lincoln Continental MK IV, a 1973 Pontiac Grand Ville Convertible, a 1973 Ford Mustang, a 1974 Pontiac Firebird Formula 455, a 1975 SV-1, a 1976 AMC Pacer and a 1977 Ford Mustang II Ghia. With the shift away from monochromatic colors came a decrease in the size of cars as well.

Indiana bill would let South Bend again capture tax money for ballpark, other needs

The South Bend Cubs are asking the Indiana General Assembly to again let the team capture state tax dollars to pay for ballpark upgrades, an effort that could also benefit a list of other publicly owned facilities and potentially even three downtown hotels. The bill would designate Four Winds Field, downtown South Bend’s three hotels, Indiana University South Bend facilities and the Howard Park Event Center as a “professional sports and convention development area,” where revenue from existing sales and income taxes, capped at $2 million a year, would go to the city rather than the state. The facilities could then use the money for capital improvement projects.
