Excavation project underway at the burial site for 1832 Cholera victims

An excavation project is underway at the former Cholera Field which was the main burial ground for victims of the Cholera epidemic. The site is located where Sligo University Hospital now stands and where the old Fever Hospital was once located. It s believed the majority of victims from the Cholera epidemic of 1832 which raged through Sligo, were buried in a mass grave at the site. Other burial places included Sligo Abbey and St John s Churchyard. It s widely believed that stories told to him by his mother of the epidemic inspired Bram Stoker to write Dracula. The excavation project is being run by Fádo Archaeology, which is based in Sligo and the Sligo Bram Stoker Society. A geophysical survey by James Bonsall from IT Sligo is also going to assist.
