Fulop discusses city salaries, bike lanes, medical marijuana at caucus, clashes with Lavarro

“Over the last year, we have tried to correct a lot of salary issues citywide,” Fulop began.
He explained that the city has reviewed municipal salaries and want to make sure they are competitive, pointing out that prior Business Administrator Brian Platt took a similar post in Kansas City, Missouri that offered far greater compensation.
“Rather than us picking a number we think is fair, we’re going to let the marketplace dictate that and be competitive with our sister cities in the region. Our goal is to make sure we are compensating people fairly,” the mayor added.

“That’s a pleasant, I don’t know what to say, thank you I guess?,” Ramos said with a laugh after being voted to lead the governing body in 2021 by a 5-3 vote. Council members Jim Doyle, Phil Cohen, and Emily Jabbour, all supporters of Bhalla, voted no.
Councilwoman-at-Large Vanessa Falco was absent.
“Thank you council president and Councilwoman [Tiffanie] Fisher, that’s a nice surprise I guess so I appreciate your confidence and I’ll do the best I can.”
Ramos seemed legitimately surprised that he received the nomination and the votes, asking Giattino to chair the rest of the annual reorganization meeting since she was already leading the meeting via Zoom.

Hudson County Democratic Chair joins Team Fulop ×
Hudson County Democratic Organization Chair Amy DeGise will join Mayor Steven Fulop’s ticket and run for City Council at-Large in this year’s upcoming citywide election.
A lifelong Jersey City resident, public school teacher, and former elected member of the Jersey City Board of Education, DeGise won a contested election to become the first woman to lead the county party in 2018.

The Hudson County Board of Chosen Freeholders ended abruptly after just over an hour yesterday after four electeds left the meeting, opting not to listen to objections to the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) contract for the fourth session in a row.

The meeting, which started around 1 p.m., came to a close around roughly 2:15 p.m. – a far cry from the 12-and-a-half hour meeting last month where the ICE contract was renewed for up to a decade.
As usual, the freeholders moved through their agenda items swiftly and public comment began around 40 minutes, led by Jersey City resident Katia Oltmann.
