Youth Hunters Can Now Hunt Big Game With Firearms in NY

Youth Hunters Can Now Hunt Big Game With Firearms in NY The DEC has announced a new opportunity for young hunters in New York state. Included in this year s budget was legislation that now allows youths ages 12 and 13 to hunt deer with a firearm or crossbow. Youth hunters ages 12 and 13 years old can hunt big game with a firearm under the supervision of an experienced adult hunter in upstate counties that opt-in to participate. For almost 20 years hunters in this age range have been able to safely hunt deer and bear with archery equipment and small game firearms. Up until now, New York was the only state that didn t allow 12-and-13-year-olds to hunt big game with a firearm. The Environmental Conservation Law 11-0935 is a temporary measure that will pilot lowering the age through 2023.

Trail of The Fallen: Orange County s Military Memorial

I am by no means an expert hiker, but I do enjoy checking out trails that are new to me around the Hudson Valley. This weekend I went with a few friends to hike at Fort Montgomery. I didn t know what to expect, just that it was probably going to be a little difficult (it was, there were ropes involved) and it would have amazing views. What I also didn t know was that I would be visiting the Popolopen Torne trail/Trail of the Fallen memorial. The peak of this Orange County hike is a large military memorial made up of painted rocks, flags, headstones and benches. It s chill-inducing, making that final stride up the mountain and coming to flags and stones that tell so many stories of the lives lost at war.
