Saturday morning at eight on WCLK s The Local Take, I talk with The Hammonds House Museum s most recent Executive Director, Leatrice Ellzy Wright, as she prepares to join the famed Apollo Theatre. Wright has been on the Atlanta cultural scene since she began working with the National Black Arts Festival as a curator and producer. Her knowledge and innovation changed the historic Hammonds House Museum in West End after just a few months.
I asked if she was leaving Hammonds House in good hands, and she assured us that she would be working with their new leader as she transitions from the position. She mentions that everybody wants to play the Apollo Theatre. The eighty-eight-year-old institution has begun to stretch out in Harlem beyond the stage in two new venues. Wright will start to lead the organization with innovative educational programming. She speaks about how culture can impact our community and nation.

.-P·P·O·W is presenting all that I have, Gerald Lovells first solo exhibition in New York City. Garnering immediate recognition for his candid approach and heavily impastoed canvases, Lovell began painting at the age of 22 after dropping out of the graphic design program at the University of West Georgia. Frustrated by the codified, academic methods ingrained in formal arts education, Lovell utilized YouTube tutorials, his background in photography, and his tightknit, Atlanta-based community of creatives to drive his burgeoning painting practice. An avid photographer, Lovells interest in vernacular photography stems from a childhood in Chicago spent looking through his grandmothers photo albums. Lovell explains My grandmother has these huge photo albums. They re so big and detailed. She is the sole keeper
