A Year of Virtual Learning Brings Out Resilience

Yaseen Mousa moves through the halls of Harrisonburg High School, backpack on his shoulder. The freshman weaves in and out of the throngs of students, saying the occasional hello to people he knows. He stops by a classroom to check out a bulletin board about a forensics club meeting. After his first two classes he heads to the cafeteria to eat lunch with his friends. They talk about an upcoming football game and plans to attend. At the end of the day, Yaseen stops by his locker and grabs some books, while putting others away. He then gets on the bus and goes home. The end of another normal day.

(WHSV) - There was a lot on the agenda for the Harrisonburg City School Board work session Tuesday evening, including the plan to introduce more high school students back into classrooms. Starting Monday, March 22, 9th and 12th graders who are failing one or more classes can return to in-person learning. Struggling 10th and 11th graders can get back in the classroom Monday, April 12. Superintendent Dr. Michael Richards says bringing high school students back has been challenging, and while Harrisonburg City Public Schools is working to bring entire grade levels back on a hybrid schedule, they need to move inch-by-inch with Harrisonburg High School.

The Culturally Relevant and Inclusive Education Practices Advisory Committee, which will hold its first meeting today, Wednesday, January 6, was established under House Bill 916, sponsored by Delegate Mark D. Sickles, and Senate Bill 853, sponsored by Senator Jennifer Boysko during the 2020 General Assembly session. The legislation directed the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) to select the committee’s members, and tasked the advisory panel with reporting its recommendations to Governor Northam, the Board of Education, and the Chairs of the House Committee on Education and Senate Committee on Educat
