Devon young farmer wins Dairy Student of the Year award

Katie Ackland says the award is a great opportunity to be recognised within the dairy sector
A young farmer from Devon has beat stiff competition to scoop this year’s prestigious RABDF Dairy Student of the Year Award.
Katie Ackland proved successful against six other finalists and one of the highest number of entries to win the national dairy award.
The competition is run by the Royal Association of British Dairy Farmers (RABDF) and sets out to identify some of the dairy industry s rising stars and new entrants.
It is designed to reflect real life challenges seen on dairy farms and wider policy issues facing the sector.

Between balancing university, farming and her social media presence, Co. Cavan’s Sophie Bell is a very busy woman. She continued all of this during one of the most difficult years many have ever experienced, and managed to stay positive through it all.
Ahead of her
AgriLand Instagram takeover tomorrow (Friday, January 22), she said that 2020 wasn’t ideal, “but all I can do is just get on with it and look forward to the days where we don’t take everything for granted”.
However, the 22-year-old is no stranger to challenges: She is in her final year of studying agriculture with animal science at Harper Adams University in the UK, an experience she said has helped her to grow.
Agri universities to issue rent refunds to students

Arrangements for lockdown rent refunds have been confirmed by numerous universities
Numerous land-based universities and agri-colleges have confirmed they will issue rent refunds to students due to the UK s current lockdown.
The government is seeking to reduce the movement of students into and across the country to minimise transmission risks.
Current coronavirus advice is that students should not return to university campuses until at least February.
Harper Adams University said students whose courses will continue online, who are not permitted to return to university-owned accommodation, will receive refunds.
Students in catered accommodation will receive a refund for the catering element of their accommodation fees for the period 9-18 December 2020 as well as the full rent refund.

Harper Adams Students’ Union (HASU) has apologised and deleted a social media post supporting Veganuary after it was heavily criticised by students and alumni.
A barrage of complaints from angry students via the university’s website, social media pages and telephone line forced the HASU into the U-turn and to admit “we got this one wrong”.
He told
Farmers Weekly: “I think the significance of this is that not only is veganism causing serious mental health issues in the farming community, but it is destroying farmers’ livelihoods. For an agricultural university to support this is really quite shocking.”
New chartered surveyor for H&H Land & Estates
H&H Land & Estates has welcomed a new chartered surveyor to the team.
Helena White is based in the Kendal office to advise clients on rural properties and property related matters across the Cumbrian region.
Originally from Devon, Helena comes from a farming family who are also involved in commercial forestry.
She graduated from Harper Adams University in 2018 with a BSc (Hons) in rural enterprise and land management.
She is a RICS chartered surveyor, registered valuer and fellow of the Association of Agricultural Valuers.
