Cameron County Judge Eddie Trevino and local health officials are urging residents, especially younger age groups, to get vaccinated to protect against COVID-19, including the highly contagious Delta variant that is expected to make its way to the Rio Grande Valley.

While almost 68% of people have been vaccinated in Cameron County, Health Authority Dr. James Castillo said historical data shows that the Valley can expect to see Delta variant cases begin to show up within the next two months.

Harlingen Medical Center received a 5-star rating award from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, or CMS, which is part of the Department of Health and Human Services.
HMC is one of 24 hospitals in Texas and the only in the county to receive the award, according to a press release.
The hospital rating is based on data measuring five aspects of quality of care including mortality, safety of care, readmission, patient experience and timely and effective care as reported by CMS Hospital Compare tool.

Christopher Romero, a physician advisor for Valley Baptist Medical Center in Harlingen, still recalls when the coronavirus first appeared in the Rio Grande Valley one year ago. We had tents set up to triage patients outside and it was just these individual isolated cases that we were initially seeing.” Romero said. “We had to have support come from outside. Entities including the military, healthcare for all these patients, and a lot of people got really sick and, unfortunately, a lot of people in the Rio Grande Valley passed away from COVID-19…and I think for a lot of front line, healthcare workers, first responders, we have yet to have the time and distance to fully process what all we went through.

One person dies every 36 seconds in the U.S. from cardiovascular disease, the CDC reports. That s about 655,000 American each year.
Chief Cardiologist at Harlingen Medical Center Dr. Shereef Hilmy says it s important to live a healthy lifestyle and know the factors that put you at higher risk of heart disease.
Hilmy says even people that show no symptoms of heart disease can have a sudden heart attack. As a matter of fact 50% of heart attacks happen as the first manifestation of heart disease, Hilmy said.
