A CITY in Sussex has been named among the UK’s best places to visit for a cultural getaway. A study by DIYS.com has ranked the country s towns and cities based on the cultural activities available for visitors and residents. The index looks at the number of art galleries, museums, theatres, libraries, independent cinemas and Michelin starred restaurants available and gives a score based on how many are available. Chichester was named as the second most cultural city in the UK, after achieving a score of 553 out of a maximum 600. The city scored the highest marks in the categories of art galleries (98.9) and art museums (95.3) – both ranked out of 100.

Appealing though they sound, even the 40,000 residents of Farnham may be surprised to learn that the Surrey market town has emerged as Britain s top cultural centre ahead of more famous places including London and Edinburgh (file photo)
Researchers who scored 500 UK towns and cities on six cultural criteria - art galleries, museums, Michelin-star restaurants, theatres, independent cinemas and libraries - awarded Farnham 566 points out of a possible 600, ahead of Chichester in West Sussex (553 points) and Winchester in Hampshire (519 points).
Herne Bay on the Kent coast and Carlisle in Cumbria complete the top five.
Stefan Gheorghe, from the website DIYS.com which commissioned the research, said: What places like Farnham, Chichester and Winchester lack in big ticket sellers, they more than make up with fine restaurants, historic theatres, beautiful streets and smaller galleries and museums of their own.
