United States Department of Justice seizes over US$3 billion in cryptocurrency related to 2016 Bitfinex hack
Less than a week after over 94,000 bitcoins linked to the 2016 Bitfinex hack were noticed in a suspicious transfer, the United States Department of Justice has announced the seizure of those bitcoins and the arrest of two individuals linked to the hack. The DOJ seized the bitcoins, currently valued at roughly US$3.6 billion, and will work with Bitfinex to return the crypto to victims of the 2016 hack.
