NASA's upcoming Psyche mission could be incredibly valuable — not only for planetary science but also for the budding asteroid mining industry.

(NEXSTAR) — NASA’s Psyche mission is scheduled to launch aboard a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket Friday morning to start a nearly six-year mission to a “metal-rich” asteroid. The mission namesake is also the target: Asteroid 16 Psyche. While NASA has conducted a number of asteroid-related missions, including the recent return of its first asteroid samples, […]

NASAs first mission designed to study a metal-rich asteroid, Psyche, will also be the first planetary mission to launch on a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket.

NASA's Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA) provided insights into the 16 Psyche asteroid that is believed to be made mostly out of metal.

NASA's Psyche spacecraft is set to launch on Oct. 12, beginning its mission to investigate a giant metal asteroid of the same name and unravel the secrets of the early solar system.

NASA's Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA) provided insights into the 16 Psyche asteroid that is believed to be made mostly out of metal.

The Psyche spacecraft is targeted to travel to the asteroid using solar-electric (low-thrust) propulsion, following a Mars flyby and gravity assist.

The James Webb Space Telescope and the now-retired SOFIA telescope, impressive as they may be, have hit their limits when it comes to studying Psyche.

NASA’s first mission to a metallic asteroid is attracting attention because of a claim it could be worth more than the global economy. Thats impossible—heres why.

Get psyched.
