A Michigan Senate bill aimed at lifting a lifetime ban on food assistance for people with more than one drug-related felony cleared the state House on Thursday and is headed to Gov. Gretchen Whitmer.
Senate Bill 1006, sponsored by Senate Minority Leader Jim Ananich, D-Flint, would eliminate the state’s current ban on eligibility for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP benefits for people with more than one felony drug conviction or outstanding warrant. It passed both chambers with bipartisan support, clearing the House on Thursday in a 92-15 vote.
