Four-legged pets in the Salina area were surprised on Friday thanks to the new Meals on Wheels for pets program. Area seniors who already receive the Meals on Wheels can apply for the free meals for their dog or cats thanks to a partnership between Salina Senior Services, Friends of the Salina Animal Shelter, and the Atherton Veterinary Clinic.
“Are fear was that seniors who were receiving the Meals on Wheels and cannot get out were giving their animals part of their food, said Rosie Walter, director of senior services. We want to make sure everyone and every animal is eating what they are supposed to be eating.
Investing in downtown Salina
While several downtown Salina businesses received new looks over the past year, one building has been gutted and renovated to give it a modern look with a taste of the original building still left.
The Wedel Financial Group renovated two downtown buildings and combined them into one at 144 South Santa Fe Ave.
Mark Wedel, a certified financial planner for the past 31 years, and his wife Carolyn put their own unique touches to the historic buildings with the help of several local contractors.
“We found out that Wells Fargo offers an independent opportunity, so we went through a process where we had to get approved,” Mark Wedel said. “We wanted to have our own business so we could control having a local experience.
Included in the memorabilia is a Kansas City Chiefs helmet signed by defensive end Frank Clark.
The benefit auction will have over 150 items and will take place online this year because of the coronavirus pandemic. It will start at noon on Friday, Feb. 5 and run until 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 7.
What is CAPS of Salina?
The goal of the nonprofit organization is to raise $60,000 this year to help offset operational expenses for programs offered by CAPS of Salina. Last year the auction raised just under $60,000. Anything we have that is not funded by grants we either have to raise the funds or get donations, said Lori Blake, CAPS of Salina executive director.

Smiles and hugs were felt at the Dillons on Planet Avenue on Saturday after Joyce Fell, of Minneapolis, Kan., received a new purse and $800 from a few generous community members of the Salina Police Scanners Facebook page who heard that she had her purse stolen at the grocery store on Thursday.
Fell went to check out at the Dillons in Salina when she realized she had accidentally left her purse in the women s bathroom at the grocery store.
“It was my fault, Fell said. My friend was waiting for me in the car and I had not even checked out yet, so I hurried up to get out of the bathroom. When I got up to the checkout, I realized I did not have my purse.
