The government can implement legislation introducing a demerit system for drivers after a Constitutional Court judgment on Wednesday. The legislation is aimed at making the roads safer, but critics say it’s not workable.

The application was opposed by both the Minister of Transport and RTIA - the body tasked with implementing Aarto.

The High Court in January sent government back to the drawing board, declaring as unconstitutional and invalid both the Aarto Act and the Aarto Amendment Act.
