Deokaran, a high-ranking official with the Gauteng Department of Health, was assassinated outside her home in Johannesburg south in 2021, weeks after flagging millions of rands worth of suspicious payments from Tembisa Hospital.
The six men who were arrested for the crime pleaded guilty to her murder on Tuesday and were sentenced to between six and 22 years in prison. And while they’ve divulged the identity of the individual who recruited them, he’s understood to have been a middleman with the ultimate paymaster still unknown.
