Act 255 News Today

Act 255 charged the Mauna Kea Stewardship and Oversight Authority with being the principal State agency with responsibility for managing the Mauna Kea lands.

The new Maunakea Stewardship and Oversite Authority is tasked with creating a new management plan to balance the use of land considered sacred by Native Hawaiians and revered as one of the best places in the world for astronomy.

The Hawaiʻi Board of Land and Natural Resources approved the plan submitted by the university’s Center for Maunakea Stewardship for the decommissioning of the UH Hilo Hōkū Kea Observatory.

NSF has developed a Draft Community Engagement Plan to provide multiple opportunities for the public to participate.
