Helicopters were back in the air dropping buckets in the North Shuswap Tuesday after they were grounded for several days due to low visibility brought on by heavy smoke. Another battle is raging alongside the wildfire fight—one between officials, and residents who feel they’ve been abandoned.

British Columbias premier says the province is looking into establishing a year-round emergency response to wildfires due to the growing frequency and scale of these disasters.

A planned ignition conducted on the Lower East Adams Lake fire in B.C.s North Shuswap region last Thursday night was “largely successful” and saved hundreds of homes from the flames, BC Wildlife Service director of provincial operations Cliff Chapman said.

Footage of escaping locals jumping into Okanagan Lake as the flames travelled down the ridge from West Kelowna has been shared widely on social media.
