PHOTO | FILE | NMG Summary Abuja, At least 28 people have died and 65 rescued after a boat capsized in Niger State, north central Nigeria. The State Emergency Management Agency said the boat carrying about 100 people capsized on Saturday at about 6pm. The passengers were returning from a local market in Zumba, in Shiroro Local Government Area of the state. Local divers engaged in search and rescue from when the accident occurred, and are still searching for the missing passengers.

Niger Boat Mishap: 28 bodies recovered, 7 others missing

According to him, 28 bodies have been recovered, 65 people rescued, while search for the remaining seven was ongoing. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that a local boat carrying about 100 people, including women and children, capsized at about 6:00pm on Saturday, midway into its two hour journey. The six-month old local boat capsized due to a heavy windstorm occasioned by the Saturday evening rain in the area. The villagers were said to be returning from a local market in Zumba village of Shiroro Local Government Area. Meanwhile, Mallam Adamu Ahmed, the Sarkin Kasuwan Zumba, however, called for more support, especially in the area of logistics, to speed up the search operation.

The bodies were recovered by local divers in the area who had been on the rescue mission since Saturday. Besides the dead bodies rescued, 65 were rescued alive while the search for not less than seven others continues. The passengers were said to be returning from Zumba which is a popular fish market in Shiroro Local government area of the state when the boat believed to have been overloaded capsized.
