Villages strive to maintain electricity capacity
By Sandy Rose Schwieterman - For the Sidney Daily News
MINSTER – One would think a new supply of clean energy would be a boon to everyone involved. Buy a solar unit, put it on your roof and you have free power. Even better, excess electricity could be fed back into the electrical grid and suddenly the electric company is paying you money for your electrical contribution. A win/win, right? Well, it’s a little more complicated than that.
In preparation for the new realities of renewable energy, the administrators of the villages of Minster, New Bremen and Jackson Center each explained the purpose of new ordinances called Behind The Meter (BTM). Each will limit the amount of energy the village can accept and also regulate the equipment’s connection to the village’s electrical grid. For all, an application fee will be assessed.

Council awards pool contract

NEW BREMEN – Pool repairs and a new park manager position were discussed at the New Bremen Council meeting Monday, Feb. 22.
Council approved an ordinance to award a contract to Shinn Brothers of Celina to replace the various drain pipes around and under the municipal pool at a cost of $105,200. Astro Pools offered a bid of $113,433. Shinn Brothers said they planned to begin the project April 15, 2021.
Village Administrator Brent Richter said replacement of the drain at the deep end of the pool may have to wait until fall because the village may not have enough time to obtain a permit from the Ohio Department of Health. He said they could not proceed with the permit process until they had a contract to repair the pool He added now that they have a their contractor on board, they can begin the process of obtaining the permit.

NEW BREMEN – The bill to repair the municipal pool is in, and at Monday night’s New Bremen Council meeting, the members decided how to proceed.
Village Administrator Brent Richter said Astro Pools had estimated that the cost to repair the multiple leaks at the municipal pool would be $98,000. Council agreed to put out requests this week for other bids to repair the pool. If no better bids are offered, Council agreed to proceed with the repair work with Astro.
The pool had lost almost a million gallons of water over the past summer. Inspection of the pool revealed that several pipes leading to and from the pool had developed leaks that allowed the water to escape all season. Richter said the pool, which was built in the late 1990’s, had schedule 40 pipe, which was the standard at the time. Current standards require the use of schedule 80 piping. Work will involve the replacement of all
