DeKalb Middle School band earns top award

WATERLOO — The DeKalb Middle School band program this week was awarded the Junior High/Middle School/Elementary All-Music Award by the Indiana State School Music Association. This is the top award the students can earn for receiving a gold rating in every area, including concert band, jazz band, and solo and ensemble contests, said Colby Stackhouse, band director for DeKalb Middle School. Only eight schools in Indiana received the award for their band departments. During this school year at DeKalb Middle School: • The Advanced Band earned a gold rating in the ISSMA Concert Contest for both the first and second semesters. It was the only middle school band to take on the challenge of competing in Group 1, the hardest level of judging. It earned a nearly perfect score at both events.

Transcript Errors End College Plans Say Richmond Parents

: File Photo: Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School. (Photo: Crixell Matthews/VPM News) Parents in Richmond say their children’s transcripts are reflecting the wrong information, and limiting their educational opportunities. While similar concerns have been raised in the past, this time around the pandemic seems to be a factor. Students began remote classes in spring 2020. To mitigate the pandemic’s disruption of the ongoing school year, students were given the choice to have courses marked as “incomplete,” or “I,” instead of failing the course.  Students were told an incomplete would not count toward their grade point average, but Betsy Milburn says it dropped her daughter’s GPA last spring.

Mr. Wilson's second act: Virtuoso's progression from SF Opera to middle-school classroom

Mr. Wilson's second act: Virtuoso's progression from SF Opera to middle-school classroom FacebookTwitterEmail Tim Wilson, music director at Lovonya DeJean Middle School, plays the trumpet during the Spring Concert.Lea Suzuki/The Chronicle Tim Wilson steps onto the small stage platform, raises his baton and asks the 100 or so students seated before him to settle down. Music, he tells them, is painted on a canvas of silence — a lovely metaphor that has no effect. The October dress rehearsal for the middle school band’s first concert of the year is not going well. Wilson waits. The hum of conversation continues, punctuated by an occasional clarinet’s revolt or trumpet’s yawp. The canvas at Lovonya DeJean Middle School in Richmond is rarely silent. So the music teacher waits some more.
