Cove ISD board to consider repealing mask mandate

If the Copperas Cove Independent School District board of trustees concurs with a request by Superintendent Joe Burns, face coverings will no longer be required in campus buildings, effective July 1. Burns is expected to ask for approval from the board Tuesday to repeal the current mask mandate in the district, according to the meeting agenda. “In an attempt to assist our community, CCISD has partnered with the City of Copperas Cove, Coryell Health, Advent Health Systems, and the DSHS to provide seven opportunities for CCISD employees, age eligible students and community members to receive the COVID vaccine in Copperas Cove,” Burns said in an action sheet attached to the agenda. “With these efforts and the efforts of local medical providers and pharmacies we are now seeing very low incidences of COVID-19 infections among our students, staff and in the community.”

COVID vaccine: Florida getting half the doses expected; second dose to come

The largest national vaccination program since the polio vaccine of the 1950s rolled out on Monday, with the first of 2.9 million doses of the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine approved last week on the way to all 50 states. That’s about half the amount states were expecting of an initial 6.4 million doses from Pfizer, but the FDA directed that half be held back for the second of the two shots required for the vaccine to reach maximum effectiveness. “They don’t want us to hold anything back for the second shot,” Florida Emergency management director Jared Moskowitz said during an interview last week with the Florida Channel.

The vaccination didn t hurt, she said. It s just that Parker, 28, a nurse in the COVID-19 intensive-care unit at UF Health Jacksonville since the beginning of the pandemic, has seen so much suffering. Now there s a sign of hope perhaps the beginning of an end to much of that suffering. I m sorry, she told reporters afterward, wiping away tears. I have to get back to my patients. The first batches of the coronavirus vaccine began arriving at UF Health Jacksonville Monday morning, to be administered to frontline hospital staff. From there, it will go to other area hospitals in the days to come.
