Newport scores below national average for LGBTQ inclusive policies

NEWPORT Newport received a below-average score on LGBTQ inclusivity from the Human Rights Campaign, prompting local LGBTQ leaders and advocates to say the mark shows the city needs to do more for its queer citizens.
The advocacy group s Municipal Equality Index examines the laws, policies and resources of a city to see how inclusive they are of LGBTQ residents. The score awards points for specific inclusive policies, such as explicit non-discrimination laws for municipal workers and the establishment of a human rights commission for the city council, as well as bonus points, or “flex” points, for resources and services for LGBTQ youth and people living with HIV/AIDs.
