Gov. Greg Abbott took a blow from his party’s right wing Monday when conservative millionaire and former state Sen. Don Huffines announced he’ll be challenging Abbott in the 2022 governor’s race. Just a few hours later, Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick received the coveted endorsement of former President Donald Trump, in his own re-election race an announcement sure to beef-up his hardline conservative bonafides and help stave off attacks from the right-most flank of Texas Republicans.
Huffines made his mark as a reliably right-wing legislator during his four years representing Dallas in the Texas Senate. The wealthy real estate developer was defeated in 2018 by Democrat Nathan Johnson, and has kept politically active since losing his reelection race.

Former state Sen. Don Huffines, a conservative Republican from Dallas who has been critical of Gov. Greg Abbott s coronavirus policies, announced Monday that he is challenging Abbott in the 2022 primary. Texas deserves actual Republican leadership that will act urgently and decisively no more excuses or lies, Huffines said in a statement, vowing bolder action on border security, property taxes and elections.
Huffines is a wealthy businessman who served in the Senate from 2015-2019. He was unseated by Democrat Nathan Johnson in 2018.
Abbott is up for a third term in 2022 and has drawn some heat from within his party for his response to the coronavirus pandemic. Huffines has criticized Abbott as being too slow to fully reopen the state and he spoke at a protest outside the Governor s Mansion last fall.

A political aide to the Texas Agriculture Commissioner is under arrest for an alleged scheme to take money in exchange for hemp licenses. Todd Smith is accused of taking 55 thousand dollars in the scheme that led to his arrest. He reportedly told a hemp license seeker that he needed 150 thousand dollars in order to receive the guaranteed hemp license. Smith serves as the top political consultant to Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller.
