(Roq La Rue) Lately I’ve been making my way through Mary Gabriel’s fascinating book Ninth Street Women. The 800-page tome (which I keep dropping on my face when I fall asleep reading it late at night) is part art history, part biography, centered on five female painters in postwar New York City who played pivotal roles in the American modern art movement. Not surprisingly, their names Lee Krasner, Elaine de Kooning, Grace Hartigan, Joan Mitchell and Helen Frankenthaler are significantly less known than their male counterparts, who include Jackson Pollock and Willem de Kooning.
