Cairo: Yemeni President Abd Rabbo Mansour Hadi has sworn in new officials whose appointments raised objections from several powers in the country, including the Southern Transitional Council (STC).
Hadi Tuesday swore in Ahmed Saleh Al Musai as Yemen’s prosecutor-general, Ahmed Obeid as the head of the advisory Shura Council, and both Abdullah Abul Gheith and Wahi Taha as deputy heads of the Shura Council, Yemen’s official news agency reported.
They took the oath of office in Riyadh.
Hadi made the appointments in decrees issued on Friday, drawing protests from the STC that is a partner to a recently formed government.
Maeen Abdul Malik Saeed also urged the international community not to surrender to “Houthi blackmailing” and intimidation.
Saeed defended his government’s strong support of the designation during a virtual interview with foreign journalists sponsored by the Sanaa Center for Strategic Studies.
He said that his government had formed a committee to handle any effects on the delivery of humanitarian assistance inside Houthi-controlled areas and the remittances of Yemenis abroad.
“We are determined to prevent any impact of the decision on the Yemenis. We have formed a committee to mitigate effects of the decision,” he said.
When the US announced its intention to designate the Houthi movement as a terrorist organization last week, Yemen’s government quickly urged the US administration to put the decision in place, predicting it would stop Houthi crimes and their looting of humanitarian assistance, and would smoothe the way for peace.
AL-MUKALLA: The internationally recognized government of Yemen and the pro-independence, separatist Southern Transitional Council (STC) began withdrawing their forces on Friday from a flashpoint in the southern province of Abyan, military officers from both sides told Arab News.
The latest redeployment of forces from contested areas in southern Yemen is part of the power-sharing Riyadh Agreement, which was designed to end hostilities between the two sides.
Alongside images of Saudi officers supervising the withdrawal of forces, Saudi Arabia s Ambassador to Yemen Mohammed Al-Jaber tweeted on Friday: “Our brave heroes from the Coordination and Political Liaison Team, the leadership and officers of the coalition forces, are hand in hand with the leaders and officers of the legitimate forces and the Southern Transitional Council to implement the agreement.”
