Christo Lamprecht fired an even-par 72, senior
Will Dickson added a 1-over-par 73 to pace Georgia Tech Monday, and both are among the top 12 individuals following the opening round of the Southwestern Invitational.
With the field battling chilly conditions and winds of 20-30 miles per hour at North Ranch Country Club, the Yellow Jackets posted a 15-over-par score of 303 and sit in sixth place in a 12-team field loaded with some of the nation’s top programs. None of the teams were able to post a subpar round Monday, and only five individuals broke par, which is 72 on the 6,992-yard layout.
TECH LINEUP – Lamprecht, a native of George, South Africa ranked the No. 2 amateur in his home country, bogeyed the first two holes in his collegiate debut, but rallied to record four birdies against two bogeys the rest of the way, and is tied for sixth place, four strokes off the individual lead.
THE FLATS – After playing its first tournament in nearly 10 months last weekend, Georgia Tech’s golf team travels to the West Coast this week to compete in its second event within a 10-day period, facing a heavyweight field in the Southwestern Invitational Monday through Wednesday in Westlake Village, Calif.
With last spring’s schedule cut short and fall events cancelled due to COVID-19, the Jackets were left to compete in various amateur events throughout the summer and fall. Head coach
Bruce Heppler moved to add two events to the front end of Tech’s spring schedule, entering his team in the Camp Creek Seminole Invitational last week (Tech finished seventh out of 10 teams) and the Southwestern Invitational. The Yellow Jackets’ slate includes seven events prior to the ACC Championship near the end of April, which will be played at the Capital City Club’s Crabapple Course in Woodstock, Ga.
Watersound, Fla. – Connor Howe and Luka Karaulic each carded 1-under-par 71s Tuesday, leading Georgia Tech to their best round of the tournament and a 7
th place finish at the Camp Creek Seminole Invitational in Watersound, Fla.
Will Dickson and
Ben Smith earned top-20 finishes individually.
TECH LINEUP – Tech posted its low round of the three days with only one double bogey or worse among its six players competing. As they did in Sunday’s opening round, the Yellow Jackets played holes 1 through 9 (Tech started on No. 10), much better than the back, with all six players under par. The four counters were 8-under-par collectively with only four bogeys after playing the back nine 8-over.
