Bizzy: Give us bigger slice

Social Share Outspoken investor Ralph “Bizzy” Williams is adamant that Barbadian entities should have a bigger slice of the renewable energy sector Government is developing to shift the country away from oil by 2030. He made the call yesterday during the first virtual session of the annual Domestic Financial Institutions Conference, held under the topic Increasing Household Investment In Renewable Energy: How the Financial Sector Can Help. During the same session, Central Bank Governor Cleviston Haynes stressed the need for Barbadians to embrace the renewable energy drive so Barbados could reduce its fuel import bill, which was $700 million pre-COVID-19. Williams, whose company Williams Solar develops solar photovoltaic projects in Barbados, questioned why conference panellist Aidan Rogers, second vice-president of the Barbados Sustainable Energy Cooperative Society, mentioned a 30 per cent portion of the renewable energy sector for Barbadians. The Golden Globes undermine artistic appreciation

Art is objectively subjective. Shows and movies, while presented through screens and speakers, are first and foremost pieces of art. Having the film industry revolve around award shows changes the very nature of art from an individual experience to a judged product. Perpetually dominated by white men and women, the film industry has reflected its age throughout the past decades. Sidney Poitier was the first black winner and nominee for a Golden Globe, winning in 1964 for “Lilies of the Field” after 20 years of Golden Globes ceremonies and hundreds of awards given. It took the Hollywood Foreign Press another 19 years to award another black man, Louis Gossett Jr., for “An Officer and a Gentleman”.

New Year incites a dangerous mindset around COVID-19

2021 has brought us false hope. The first day of the year was looked at with much excitement and anticipation,  as if the moment the clock struck 12:00 our lunch dividers would be put down, our masks would be ripped off and our loved ones would be taken out of their hospital beds. But, the struggles of the world don’t follow a calendar.  The mindset that 2021 will be a “clean slate” is jeopardizing our chance at preventing a repeat of the last 365 days. The new year is not time to be more lenient with our COVID-19 protocols, but an opportunity to remain diligent and make 2021 what we all want it to be.
