Justice Dept. charges bombmaker in Pan Am explosion that killed 270

Cohen The Justice Department announced new charges Monday against a Libyan bombmaker in the 1988 explosion of Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland, an attack that killed 259 people in the air and 11 on the ground. Sarah Susannah Buchanan Philipps of Newtonville was one of the passengers on the flight. A memorial plaque honoring her can be found next to a bench near the Newton Centre playground. According to Syracuse University’s PanAm Flight 103 Lockerbie Air Disaster Archives, Philips attended Claflin School in Newtonville, F. A. Day Middle School, and graduated from Newton North High School in 1986.
