Why you re never too old to wear trainers, and the 12 best options for men
How to avoid looking like a man in a midlife crisis while wearing trainers

Unlike my father, who wore sensible shoes as a boy (I know because he never tired of telling me), I spent my formative years shod in adidas, Puma and Nike. My generation has a soft spot for trainers and I plan to keep wearing mine long into my 70s.
Millennials, however, consider some styles to be “dad trainers”. To avoid looking like a man in a midlife crisis, heritage styles are the best way forward. Take the Vans Old Skool (the first to use the signature Vans side-stripe), which first debuted in 1977, or the Nike Air Pegasus, first introduced in 1983. Boston-based Saucony, over a century old, has released an eco-friendly spin on its iconic Jazz Court model which uses cotton and jute, but no plastic.
After recently appearing in a “Stone” colorway,
Nike‘s throwback Air Pegasus ‘83 has now popped up in a classic “Blue Void” makeup. A onetime do-anything running shoe turned Nike Sportswear lifestyle favorite, the Air Pegasus ‘83 is a callback to the genesis of one of Nike Running‘s most popular and longest-standing lines. The “Blue Void” adds to that mystique with a Georgetown Hoyas-esque color scheme.
Uppers are constructed of a smooth steel gray nylon, and overlaid with a lighter gray suede on the mudguard, eyestays and heel. “Blue Void,” a dark navy shade, gets into the mix on the midfoot Swooshes and heel tab. Further branding is served by a “Blue Void hit” on the nylon tongue’s fabric tag and a gray Nike spellout on the heel tab. Gray laces tie off the top half, trim EVA midsoles feature a stacked mixture of soft-yet-supportive gray and white foam and black waffle outsoles round off the look.

Nike is bringing back a long-forgotten silhouette from 1983. Dubbed Omega Flame, the shoe will be resurrected in its original colorway as a nod to the footwear giant’s heritage.
The shoe has a tapered look that closely resembles the Air Pegasus 83, with a body that looks a bit more rounded, especially near the toes. This particular colorway is colored mostly in red, complemented by bright yellow accents. Red suede appears along the eyelets, toecap and heel, while smooth full-grain leather panels are placed at the heel tab and Swoosh. A vibrant gradient on the sidewalls red and yellow from heel to toebox completes the rest of the uppers. All of these details rest over a crisp white midsole to finish off the throwback-look of the sneakers.
