Lt. Hyrum Hanlon's commanding officer called the perished sailor courageous and patriotic, adding that he "will be truly missed by his family and the Hawkeye community."

A U.S. Navy aircraft with three people aboard crashed in waters near the Eastern Shore boundary of Virginia and Maryland on Wednesday evening, killing one, authorities said.

"It takes a courageous and patriotic person to devote their life to the selflessness of serving in the armed forces," Navy Commander Martin Fentress Jr. said.

Navy officials identified Lt. Hyrum Hanlon as the crewmember who died in a Wednesday crash of a Norfolk-based U.S. Navy aircraft.

The crash involving a Navy E-2D Hawkeye aircraft happened off the Wildcat Marsh, which is near Chincoteague on Virginia's Eastern Shore.

According to a bipartisan commission, the U.S. military experienced more than 6,000 aviation mishaps from 2013 to 2019, killing 224 pilots and aircrew members.
