Views sought on £3million facelift for historic Wanstead Park | East London and West Essex Guardian Series

The people of Wanstead and Woodford have been asked how they would spend £3 million breathing new life into a historic park. Wanstead Park was put on English Heritage’s ‘at risk’ register in 2009, amid concerns about the state of its waterways and woodlands, as well as the condition of historic features such as its 18th century grotto. Following the public consultation, a final plan will be drawn up in March and the Corporation of London – which manages Wanstead Park as part of Epping Forest – will use that to bid for cash from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF).

DIY SOS-style rescue mission for couple whose uninsured home was destroyed in gas blast

An entire community has stepped in to rebuild the home of an elderly couple after it was destroyed by a gas explosion.  Josie Cornish, 75, her husband Alan, 73, and their 48-year-old son Darren miraculously survived after the blast ripped through their home in Bude, Cornwall.  Mrs Cornish had instinctively lit the oven to check it was working when they smelled gas - igniting an explosion which tore their two-storey semi detached property apart.  Local builders merchants, bricklayers, plasters and electricians have now come forward and offered to rebuild the house, for free.    Covered in bruises and with half his house blown away, paramedic Darren Cornish miraculously survived the explosion
