Tánaiste Leo Varadkar has said he expects the economy to “take off like a rocket” after the pandemic.
He was speaking as new figures reveal the number of redundancies planned by employers more than doubled last year.
Employers notified the minister for enterprise of 11,744 redundancies between March and the end of last month.
This compared with 5,007 proposed job losses that were notified during the same period in 2019.
Under employment legislation, employers proposing collective redundancies must flag them with the minister.
Mr Varadkar said the numbers would have been much worse if the Government had not put an economic rescue package in place.
